Tasting Notes

Cask Type

Just as the first tantalising glimpse of the Isle of Arran across the narrow strait from Adrossan makes one eager to board the squat little ferry, so that raising of the glass to the nose of the eponymous whisky, and breathing deeply of honeyed orange liqueur and sweet biscuity wafers, heightens anticipation of the manifest pleasures to come.

We at Vintage Bottlers are proud that Isle of Arran, the third in our series of some of Scotland’s finest and least-known single malt whiskies, is this modern iteration of the Island’s oldest legal spirit. It is distilled in Lochranza in the north of the island where the whisky was once known as Arran water to deceive the authorities! Today, that same, soft Scottish rain comes to rest in Loch Na Davie, flows gently through the Ea san Biorach burn, and down six waterfalls, purifying all the time before it plays its part in creating a clean, sweet, non-chill filtered dram.

The colour of burnt sugar, this 24-year-old Isle of Arran is generous with its big, mouth-filling flavours of malt, digestive biscuits and closing notes of green apple. Bottled from its hogshead at 51.60% it affords a pleasing complexity and a gently warming glow.

We firmly believe that this charming island of red squirrels, deer, golden eagles, otters and basking sharks is very well served by the whisky that bears its name, and that you will be delighted with the encounter.

Colour: Dark caramel

Nose: Big sweet vanilla notes, orange liqueur and rich dry biscuits

Palate: Instant mouth-filling malt and wheaty disgestive biscuit, followed by suggestion of kiwi fruit and tart, green apple

Finish: Further rich maltiness, ending with dark berry.

Gordon’s verdict: A most welcome addition to the bank of whisky experiences. The fruit keeps the whisky light, while the grains provide good depth. A very rounded, satisfying malt.
